“When the time comes, how can I make sure that I will have a Poppy’s funeral?”

This question, or something like it, is one which we hear increasingly often.

It might come from someone who’s been to a funeral arranged by Poppy’s or whose friend or family member has experienced our care. Or it might be asked by someone who has clear ideas about the kind of funeral they want, and wants reassurance that this will be possible.

Up until now, we’ve not had a structured way to help people who want to plan ahead. But, this month, that’s changing as we introduce our new pre-paid funeral plan.

Why is Poppy’s launching a funeral plan now?

It’s taken time because we wanted to make sure every detail of the plan matched our values and approach. This meant no hard sell. No prescriptive packages. Full transparency. Choice at every step. It meant finding a partner to work with who we trusted and who ‘got’ what we were trying to achieve.

Getting it right matters. For us and, most importantly for our clients. Especially as we have been outspoken in the past about the risks and failings of traditional funeral plans. However, launching our own plan will not stop us continuing to speak up when we see bad practice elsewhere.

How are funeral plans changing?

Pre-paid funeral plans have grown in popularity over the years. More than 2 million people in the UK have taken out a funeral plan and almost one in five UK funerals are now funded by pre-payment plans. But changes are coming for the funeral plan industry.

Lack of government regulation has opened up unacceptable risks of exploitation for people taking out plans. So we’re pleased to see that the Financial Conduct Authority will be regulating all funeral plans from July 2022, improving the situation for consumers and putting all providers under greater scrutiny.

What’s distinctive about Poppy’s pre-paid funeral plan?

Each funeral plan taken out with Poppy’s will look different. Just like our regular service, we’ll talk together about what’s most meaningful for you, and how we can help make that happen. With our guidance, you’ll be the one who determines exactly what goes in the plan, you’ll understand the costs involved and decide whether to pay for it in instalments or by lump sum.

You can add special wishes as well, letting us know songs, readings or other elements that you’d like to be included. You can make changes or additions at any point, although there may be more to pay if you require additional services.

The plan itself is provided by Ecclesiastical Planning Services, which is part of a specialist, UK-based financial services group and owned by a registered charity. A significant proportion of Ecclesiastical’s profits are passed to its charitable owner and donated to community causes in the UK.

Unlike some plans, every penny of the full plan value (excluding the initial management fee of £225) is held securely in a whole-of-life assurance policy and ring-fenced for your funeral when the time comes. The money is made immediately available at the time of need and the funds cannot be used for anything other than your funeral.

The Ecclesiastical Group has been protecting people, property and funds since 1887 and most of its group companies are already regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Ecclesiastical Planning Services has offered pre-paid funeral plans since 2006. We’re confident they are experts in the field, as well as sharing our values.
